The kicking is all new with instead of the simple flick of the right stick, the user will now need to time his or her clicks in order to perfect the kick. Usually the QB gets the ball off in a forward motion in previous games. I don't know what it is but the QB has a tendency to fumble the ball more often than throwing the ball when the defense is coming for a sack. Speaking of fumbles the glaring issue on the offensive side is the QB fumbles. The special moves is a risk/ reward though as fumbles occur far more often when they are performed. We now have a better ability to control the back through open holes while also performing special moves with the left trigger. The running game is more user friendly than has been sense I can remember. This makes the game more realistic, I think as receivers do have a tendency to drop balls or the QB miss throws the ball as well. This is not just deep balls either, every catch is not guaranteed as the player will need to do their best to give their receiver enough space and proper timing to catch the ball. EA looks to have improved the secondaries covering ability while also decreasing the receivers ability to make the catch. In Madden 16 the deep ball was a real problem to cover with the aggressive catch option being too useful. The problems in Madden 16 that were addressed were primarily the overpowered catching, the improvement to the running game, and my personal favorite addition the improved kicking format.
